Cumulative Load

The article provides information on using the PitcheroGPS Team App to understand cumulative load across different team sessions

Quick links:

Overview

Cumulative load is available within the PitcheroGPS Team App to help you understand how a player's recent workload compares with their usual workload.

Cumulative load looks at a player's selected performance metric over the last 7 days and compares this with their average weekly load over the previous 28 days.

This helps you see whether a player's current week is lighter, similar to, or heavier than usual.

How cumulative load is calculated

Cumulative load uses three key figures:

Metric Description
Acute load Everything a player has recorded for the selected metric in the last 7 days, added together.
Chronic load A player's usual weekly load. This is calculated from everything they recorded in the last 28 days, divided by 4. Days they did not train count as zero.
Load ratio The player's acute load divided by their chronic average. This shows how their recent load compares with their usual weekly load.

A load ratio of 1.00 means the player's acute and chronic loads are equal.

For example, a load ratio of 1.33 means the player's acute load is approximately one third higher than their usual weekly load.

Load bands

A player's load ratio places them into one of four load bands.

Load band Load ratio Description
Low Under 0.80 A lighter week than usual for the player.
Average 0.80 to 1.40 About the same as the player usually does.
High 1.40 to 1.60 A heavier week than usual for the player.
Very high 1.60 and above Much heavier than usual for the player.

Because the load ratio compares a player's current load with their own chronic average, the bands are personalised to each player.

Each player's row

The cumulative load view provides additional information for each player.

Load ratio

Shows where a player's recent load sits against their own average, coloured according to their load band.

Room in this band

Shows how much additional load a player can record before moving into the next load band.

This is an indication of where the player's current load sits within the band and should not be interpreted as a recommended amount of additional training.

Daily activity

Each bar represents the player's load for that day for the selected performance metric.

This allows you to see how the player's load has been distributed across the 7-day period.

Using cumulative load

Cumulative load can be used to quickly understand how a player's current workload compares with their normal workload.

When reviewing a player's cumulative load, consider:

  • Their load ratio and current load band.
  • How their daily activity has been distributed across the week.
  • How their current workload compares with their own usual workload.
  • The performance metric that has been selected.

Cumulative load is designed to provide additional context when reviewing player workloads and should be considered alongside your team's normal monitoring and coaching processes.
